How to start my chainsaw.?

I have a 15 year old Stihl chainsaw. My friend had it started last night but I didn't pay attention to how he started it. Now I cannot get it going. The biggest problem is that I simply cannot easily pull the string. It is very hard to move. Each try I can only move it about a quarter of the way to being fully pulled out. Any ideas?
